Miles for MG
In 2022, just after we got engaged, my wife Mirette began having moments of slight slurred speech. At first it was subtle and relatively easy to explain away. But over time it became impossible to ignore. On our wedding day, the left side of her face began to droop. It was unsettling and confusing, even as we celebrated one of the happiest days of our lives.
The months that followed were filled with uncertainty. Mirette’s muscle weakness worsened, answers were nowhere to be found, and we were told it would be six months before she could even see a neurologist. After what felt like endless waiting, we were finally connected with a specialist in Philadelphia. Within days of arriving, we had an answer: Myasthenia Gravis.
Getting a diagnosis was a relief, but it was only the beginning.
The past four years have been marked by countless doctor visits, ICU stays, multiple treatments, and constant fatigue. Myasthenia Gravis is unpredictable and unforgiving. Each day begins with uncertainty: will she be able to speak later, will her breathing become labored, or will a short walk require hours of recovery? Things we once took for granted are now precious and fleeting moments.
And yet, through it all, Mirette has endured. She has given birth to our two beautiful children, June and Jack. She shows up every day, even when her muscles actively work against her. Her resilience, strength, and spirit are nothing short of extraordinary. She inspires everyone she meets and is, without question, the strongest person I know.
While treatment and research have come a long way, there is still no cure for Myasthenia Gravis. Continued funding is critical. It offers hope, progress, and a better future for so many families affected by this disease.
Next fall, I will be running a marathon in Mirette’s honor and dedicating every mile to raising funds for the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America. The MGFA does life‑changing work through research, education, and advocacy. I hope you’ll consider joining me by donating, pledging a dollar amount per mile, or purchasing merchandise. All proceeds go directly to the MGFA.
